ProAmpac Launches Shelf Protect Antimicrobial Packaging With Copperprotek to Extend Shelf Life of Fresh Meat, Salmon and Cheese

Flexible packaging maker ProAmpac has launched ProActive Intelligence Shelf Protect (SP), a direct food-contact active packaging technology designed to slow the microbial growth that causes spoilage in fresh meat, seafood and dairy. The Cincinnati-based company developed the technology with Copperprotek and is building it into shrink bags and films that meat processors already use.

ProAmpac says Shelf Protect is FDA- and USDA-compliant for its intended uses in fresh beef, fresh pork, cooked sausage, deli meat, fresh salmon and fresh cheese. The launch was announced on 19 October.

How the technology works

Shelf Protect’s patented antimicrobial system is engineered directly into the food-contact layer of the packaging film. ProAmpac describes it as biotechnology packaging that helps reduce microbial growth associated with spoilage, supporting longer shelf life through storage and distribution.

Its partner, Copperprotek, founded by Chilean scientist Javier Lavin, makes a patented copper-based microparticle that is combined with polyolefin resin and layered into packaging film. In January 2025, Food and Drink Technology reported that Copperprotek had secured FDA/FSIS clearance in June 2024 for what it called the first copper salts-based shelf-life extension additive for food-packaging materials. Lavin said the collaboration brings its biotechnology “into packaging formats that help food producers maintain product quality and extend shelf life.”

ProAmpac says the additive does not affect the clarity of the film or change its physical and seal properties. For approved applications, no extra on-pack labelling is required beyond a “use by” or “use or freeze by” date.

Three formats for meat and cheese lines

The technology is being incorporated into three product lines:

  • TruTite-SP-1000 boneless shrink bags and tubestock
  • ClearShield-SP-1000 bone-in shrink bags and tubestock
  • Envio-SP-1000 forming and non-forming films

The product page lists the series under food and beverage rollstock for North America, available as bone-in and boneless shrink bags, forming web and top web.

What the trials show, and what they don’t

According to ProAmpac, studies run by food manufacturers and third-party laboratories found extended shelf life for fresh beef, fresh pork and cooked sausage in tested applications. They also showed improvements in quality indicators linked to microbial spoilage and odour development during storage. The company also says the packaging keeps microbial counts lower even when the cold chain is interrupted.

The company does not publish a single shelf-life figure. It stresses that results vary by product, processing conditions, the microbial load at the point of packing and storage practices, and that customers need case-by-case food trials before rollout.

“For meat processors, every product lost represents an investment in production, packaging, and distribution that goes unrealized,” said Sam Kessler, ProAmpac’s senior innovation engineer. “Shelf Protect gives customers a new tool to help preserve that value, bringing active packaging technology to the shrink bags and films they rely on.”

Why it matters for protein processors

Active packaging, meaning materials that interact with the food or headspace rather than simply containing it, has long been used for oxygen scavenging and moisture control. ProAmpac is pitching Shelf Protect as an antimicrobial addition to that toolkit, aimed at cutting losses from markdowns, shrink and disposal while keeping familiar bag and film formats.

For processors, the attraction is a drop-in format: the same shrink bags and forming films, with a functional layer added. The open questions are how consistent the shelf-life gains prove across plants and products, and what the material costs compared with the value of reduced spoilage and longer distribution windows. Shelf Protect joins ProAmpac’s wider ProActive Intelligence portfolio of active and intelligent packaging. ProAmpac is owned by investment firm PPC, along with management and co-investors.
