Circus Begins Commercial Autonomous Meal Production in Abu Dhabi, Its First Market Outside Europe
German food robotics company Circus SE has started commercial operation of its CA-1 autonomous food production system in Abu Dhabi, marking its first operating market outside Europe. The deployment is being run in partnership with contract caterer Royal Prestige Food Contracts, with Dubai scheduled to follow.
A regional launch event is planned for 6 October, but commercial production is already under way, according to IN Food.
Certification opens the market
The rollout follows certification of the CA-1 Series 4 under the Emirates Conformity Assessment Scheme (ECAS), issued by the UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology and verified by TÜV SÜD. Circus also states that the system complies with UAE RoHS requirements.
The certification covers the equipment’s route to market. Responsibility for food safety controls around ingredients, production, cleaning and service remains with the catering operator.
A high-volume catering partner
Royal Prestige produces more than three million meals a year for customers including government bodies, the UAE armed forces, ADNOC and the Red Crescent. Circus says its robots are using ingredients sourced locally through Royal Prestige’s existing procurement network, avoiding the need for a separate supply chain dedicated to the automation.
The modular Circus Pods that house the systems are intended to be manufactured in the region, although the company has not disclosed volumes or suppliers.
Inside the CA-1
The CA-1 is a self-contained autonomous kitchen rather than a robot arm added to a conventional cooking line. The Series 4 unit:
- Occupies around seven square metres.
- Holds 36 ingredient silos and uses four induction cooking stations.
- Includes an integrated dishwasher, cooling and eight heated pick-up slots.
- Can produce more than 500 dishes per ingredient load.
Circus states that a single unit can produce around 800 meals a day with less than one hour of human interaction. Storage, portioning, cooking, plating, collection and cleaning are coordinated within one cell and managed by CircusOS software, which links production to demand planning, diagnostics, menu control and inventory.
The Series 4 platform entered volume production in 2025 after a redesign of several core systems, and Circus has since moved into customer deployments in workplaces, retail and catering environments.
What remains to be proven
Circus has not published a binding deployment total for Royal Prestige or a timetable for a wider Gulf fleet. The significance at this stage is the move from certification to live production in a new geography.
Commercial catering places demands on automation that demonstrations do not. Output must remain consistent across service windows and menus, and cleaning, replenishment, food safety and uptime must be maintained without shifting hidden manual work onto staff around the machine. A partner of Royal Prestige’s scale provides an established operational baseline against which meal output, downtime, ingredient use and labour input can be measured.
Why it matters
The Gulf is an attractive market for kitchen automation. Contract catering volumes are high, labour is largely imported and governments are actively promoting advanced technology adoption. A successful Abu Dhabi deployment, followed by a repeatable rollout in Dubai, would give Circus evidence that its platform can be transferred between markets without substantial re-engineering.
For foodservice operators elsewhere, the project will offer one of the first large-scale tests of whether compact autonomous kitchens can deliver lower operating costs in day-to-day institutional catering rather than in showcase locations.
