Mengniu Bets on LC19 Probiotic to Build a GLP-1 Functional Dairy Range for Asia
Chinese dairy group Mengniu is positioning its patented probiotic strain Lactobacillus paracasei LC19 as a platform for metabolic health dairy, an early move by a major Asian dairy processor to prepare product lines for the growing use of GLP-1 drugs. The company is promoting the strain heavily, including through a documentary dedicated to the ingredient, and plans to take it from supplements into everyday dairy formats, according to a report in FoodNavigator-Asia.
The science claim behind LC19
Mengniu’s pitch rests on a gut microbial metabolite called tryptophan-conjugated cholic acid (Trp-CA). Research published in the journal Cell by a team including Peking University scientists reported that Trp-CA levels were markedly lower in people with type 2 diabetes, that the compound improved glucose tolerance in diabetic mice, and that it acts on a receptor called MRGPRE to boost secretion of GLP-1, the gut hormone mimicked by drugs such as semaglutide.
Peking University professor Pang Yanli, who worked with Mengniu on identifying the strain, said the team narrowed its search to bacterial strains that could efficiently produce Trp-CA. LC19 was selected because it can synthesise the compound from the amino acid tryptophan and bile acids. A Chinese patent filed by Peking University covers the use of the strain to generate Trp-CA in food and pharmaceutical compositions.
Clinical evidence in humans is still developing. A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial at Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital is testing an LC19 probiotic milk powder against a non-Trp-CA-producing placebo strain in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients, with plasma GLP-1 among the measured outcomes. The trial registry lists primary completion in October 2026.
From supplement to everyday dairy
Mengniu has already launched LC19 supplements, including a probiotic powder sold under its YouRuiAn brand. The bigger opportunity it describes is in mainstream dairy. Early targets include senior milk powders and functional adult milk powders positioned around blood sugar management, rather than weight management.
Chilled dairy is the next focus. Shusen Li, general manager of Mengniu’s product R&D centre, said chilled dairy has kept growing despite pressure on the wider milk market, and that improved cold-chain, research and supply chain capabilities have opened a new phase of functional development. The company estimates that chilled fermented dairy appears in an average of 2.4 eating occasions per consumer per day, from breakfast to meal replacement, making yoghurt a high-frequency carrier for functional ingredients.
GLP-1 demand in Asia Pacific
In Asia Pacific, GLP-1 medicines are still mainly used for diabetes management, but awareness of their weight-management effects is spreading quickly on the back of US adoption. Generic versions are being produced in China and India, which is likely to widen access and accelerate the market for companion foods.
For food manufacturers, that creates two linked opportunities: products that support people taking GLP-1 drugs, who typically need protein-dense, smaller portions, and products that position natural GLP-1 support for consumers who are not on medication. Mengniu’s strategy targets the second, and depends on regulators accepting the claims it wants to make. Health claim rules for functional foods are strict in most markets, and brands moving into this territory will need clinical data rather than mechanism studies alone.
A deep strain library as a moat
Mengniu says its intellectual property portfolio of probiotic strains now exceeds 18,000, suggesting LC19 is unlikely to be the only candidate it brings forward as interest in metabolic health grows. For Western dairy and ingredient suppliers, the move shows how Asian processors are using proprietary microbial assets, rather than generic probiotics, to compete in the emerging GLP-1 food category.
